Former US Youth Soccer ODP star shines for Notre Dame (11-2002)

November 2002

When former US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program star Shane Walton hits the field Saturday night he’ll be playing a different type of football.

The three-time SNICKERSÒ US Youth Soccer National Champion will help his 7th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on 18th ranked Air Force at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs. Both teams are undefeated with 6-0 records.

Walton, a 5-11, 185-pound cornerback, leads the Fighting Irish with five interceptions, including three in the team’s 22-0 season-opening win vs. Maryland.

Walton played for the La Jolla Nomads (California Youth Soccer Association – South) that won three SNICKERSÒ US Youth Soccer National Championships. He assisted the game-winning goal when the Nomads won the Don Greer Cup (Under-17) in 1997. With Walton, the Nomads also won the D.J. Niotis Cup (U-16) in 1996 and the James P. McGuire Cup (U-19) in 1999.
